A classic incandescent fixture doesn’t have much to go wrong. A few splices, and the sockets. A newer fixture probably has some current limiting devices (to keep you from putting 100 w incandescent bulbs in a fixture rated for 26w cfls).  Those do fail. 

Take it down, verify the connection is good, and that there is power. If that checks out, take the luminaire appart, and inspect it.
