[Shop-talk] really dumb question

What I’ve experienced twice now is sudden hard to steer at very slow speeds: one time turning into the driveway into the parking structure (a few weeks ago maybe) and then again this morning, going less than five mph inside my parking structure. It didn’t last more than one full turn to lock, each time, once turning right and the other left.

Someone said: “but that can also be the rack.” Rack was replaced maybe five years ago? They said it was leaking. I stopped trusting this shop a couple years ago after a couple other issues. But, I don't think it's the rack.

I’ve seen no leaking. It was too dark to check the fluid level this morning but just now I did have to add fluid. Hopefully that is the issue.

For all the years I've owned vehicles with power steering pumps, I've never had one go out.

Do they go out all of a sudden or are there symptoms that lead up to it? If symptoms, what are they please?
