[Shop-talk] Cheap, strong, flat file storage?

Masonite would be great for the actual shelves (bonus that things slide well on it) if I could find a metal edge that could support it and stop it sagging. She wants 42" x 36" ideally, and that's too long a span.

But "making" an accordion file is out of our time/patience zone I'm afraid.

Most of the dividers don’t have be rigid because the paper underneath will support the dividers. Add thicker dividers as necessary to make the stack easier to open. Something like Masonite should work.

Safco has stackable plastic units similar to desktop units that hold 8.5x11 paper, but they're 42 x 30 or so. Problem is they cost about $60 per tray. Used drafting storage units are still many $100s.
