Mark, I considered that route but I don’t have as much need for the tools as I did when I volunteered weekly at Habitat. I know that is blasphemy, but I’m now 71 @ mostly need the tools around the place so a tool upgrade isn’t worth it.

Thanks for the suggestion though!

Peace,
Pat

Howdy,

I don't know how big a deal this really is, but I've heard that the tools designed for Li-Ion batteries have protection circuits / smarts so that they don't over-discharge the Li-Ion battery or whatever. I've certainly heard of Li-Ion batteries catching fire / whatever if they're abused.

Because of that, when my 18v NiCad Milwaukee stuff needed some love about 4 months back I bit the bullet and upgraded to the new Li-Ion tool hotness. It wasn't the cheapest thing I've ever done, but I'm super happy about the improvements in cordless tools in past the 8 to 15 years. Much lighter weight, more power, and more runtime. Hard to go wrong with any of that. :-)

> Thanks, Eric. I’ve checked with some of the rebuilders & they say they can only do NiCad batteries. I really like the reduced weight of the Li-Ion batteries so want to stay with them if possible. I have a couple coming in today that I bought on Amazon so I’ll be able to check them out soon. If desired I can post how they work our. The last Ni-Mh batteries I bought worked fine until they develop a bad connection from being dropped. Repaired the connection & they worked again.

It seems that DeWalt has quit making 18V batteries & now supports their 18v tools using an adapter that allows their 20v Li-Ion batteries to be used in the 18v tools. I have one of the adapters and, while it works, makes the tools a bit awkward. There are after-market 18v li-Ion batteries on the market. Does anyone have experience with any of them, good or bad?
