It was black, Tim... but the original coat on the other screws/bolts was also... just like a carbon bolt that’s not coated with zinc or whatever

What did the surface of the metal look like after removal from the solution? I have been using EvapoRust and do not like the way the metal is turned black.

Found a product from “Krud Kutter” called ‘a must for rust’ About a 8 oz bottle for about 6 bucks
dumped it into a plastic container and loaded the carriage bolts,nuts and washers... left it in solution for
about 2 hours then took them out.... clean as a whistle. Rinsed with water (per instructions) and dried, then
coated with wd-40... Looked like new.
+1 for Krud Kutter... a good inexpensive solution... also comes in spray bottle and gallon containers
