I'd go to Ikea and find a short bookcase of the right width and depth 
(ignore the height) to fit in the opening.  Then cut the case down and 
use a shelf with slide out mounted to the cut down case. You'd have a 
pull out desk and a stepped shelf to hold a monitor, phone, etc.  Leave 
enough clearance so you can stow the desk without clearing it.
