One thing to consider: if the bay that has the problematic sensor 
placement is for one of your rarely driven cars you can be the sensor.  
Wire up  a normally open momentary contact switch to the sensor inputs 
to the controller and hold the button down when you want to move the 
door.  If someone or something is in the way: don't push/release the 
switch. Safe, easy, though a bit less convenient.

Note that some door controllers want to see something different than 
just a switch close, so it might not work for you case (but you could do 
the same with the existing sensor and a judiciously placed spring and 
hinge).
