I think you're probably going to have to find a different motor for it.

Most single phase AC motors are simple induction motors, and they don't like
being slowed down much.  You might be able to get 20 or perhaps even 30%
without losing too much torque (or having the start switch close); but for
cutting metal on a woodcutting bandsaw, you're probably looking for more
like 90% reduction.

Another option might be to add a jack shaft and pulleys to step the speed
down.  ISTR several articles in HSM on that topic.

As a side note, there are lots of tread mills (exercise machines) being
thrown away with perfectly good 1 or 2 hp DC motors in them.  Generally it's
the controller that fails, not the motor.
