[Shop-talk] air conditioning misting system

I’ve had the same input… I’m consulting at a client in North Carolina. They have a few roof-top units that went overtemp when it got up to around 90 degrees – which happens regularly.

They put sprayers on them so the building could keep running, but definitely see it as a band-aid.

Our maintenance guys here have rigged up a system like that to help a condenser on one outdoor (rooftom commercial) unit that keeps tripping out on overtemp. It seems like it has worked this summer, but I can't help but think it's a band-aid, masking the true cause of the problem...

Depending on the mineral content of your water it seems like a good way to get a nice hard scale build up on the evaporator coil, and would also contribute to corroding the AC housing. My guess is that if it was actually good in practice (as opposed to sounding like a great idea in theory) the A/C manufacturers would be installing them at the factory.

Anyone have any experience with the mister systems you install on your evaporator coil in your outside unit... good, bad, waste of time.. or how many thousands of dollars and kilowatt hours have you saved... internet hype makes them sound like the best thing since they put pockets on shirts...
