Modern window AC units use the same trick.  The exterior fan blade dips 
into a pool of condensate from the evaporator coil to spray the 
condenser coil.  It's a very sound principle.

If possible, simple running the condensate drain to drip on the 
condenser coil/fan, if possible, would help.
