I tried spraying water on the window unit in my shop when it got up to 100 F here in Texas. Didn't seem to do much then I realized that I've never seen it drip condensation so looked inside and saw that it throws the water onto the condenser so wasn't much to be gained.
What did work was rigging a cover over it so the sun wasn't beating down on it.

There is plenty of condensation available, and it is essentially distilled water, so scale shouldn't be an issue. What they did was continuously splash the condensate onto the coil, providing some evaporative cooling. It isn't a miracle, but apparently it helped.

My guess is that if it was actually good in practice (as opposed to sounding like a great idea in theory) the A/C manufacturers would be installing them at the factory.
