[Shop-talk] Snow blower

Jimmy and all – thanks for the responses.

As far as I know it IS a 2-stage, so the comment about the power level was helpful. I didn’t go see it, but my friend did [brother of the seller], and it sounds like it is in OK condition – but not great. Also, the seller is not really mechanically inclined, so I would expect it to need some maintenance, if not repair.

All that said, since he was still at $200, I passed on it.

Thanks again for the input!

It's hard to say without looking at it. $200-$300 is probably what I'd pay for one in good condition though at 5HP it might be a little under-powered if it's a 2-stage model. If it's a single-stage model (do they even make 24-inch single-stage blowers?), I don't think I'd pay more than $150 unless it's in pristine condition.

If you do decide to look at it, check the auger to make sure it's not about to rust apart (that happened to me once). And if you buy a 2-stage model...either this one or a different one...be sure to buy a set of shear pins for that model. You can 5-packs on Amazon pretty cheap. The shear pin is sacrificial and protects the engine and auger if you hit something hard (like a chunk of ice).

Anybody know anything about this snowblower? A friend’s brother is selling what looks like [in pictures] to be an MTD 5HP, I’m guessing 24 inch. I don’t know how old it is.

I live in Michigan, so it DOES snow every winter. I can use a good sized blower, though my drive and sidewalk aren’t terribly large – certainly not the 8000 sq ft on the house I sold!

He is not terribly mechanically inclined, so I have no confidence it will be in great shape [I haven’t seen it, and it’s a little bit of a drive away]. Last I heard, he ‘managed to get it to start’ last winter…

Any ideas of what it’s worth? $200?
