[Shop-talk] What animal is in my ceiling? bat tanget...

Actually, now that I recall, one of the ridge vent ends I saw them entering/exiting from was on the north end of my house. I suppose they will use any entrance they can to a nice cozy attic!
BTW, droppings will usually have sparkles from the insect wings.

Well, WI have something weird going on...ha
The neighbor to the east of us had them coming out at least the north side, the neighbor on the west on at least his east side, and I've seen them come out three side of my place. too funny.

Generally you will find bats entering and leaving in the east, south, or southeast of the structure. Any place I saw them entering my house was pretty protected, like a soffit, or the end of a ridge vent that was not sealed properly. Droppings can be noticed on inside or outside.
I got most of my education (and the bat houses that I built) from the Bat Conservancy… http://www.batcon.org/, as well as the ‘bat man’ that I hired for the exclusion (after I tried unsuccessfully).

They are good to have around, just not in the attic!

The timing leans towards bats coming and leaving. If you have enough, as one our neighbors did, you can definitely hear them going in and out.
"Droppings will be at the entry points"...I sure hope this isn't accurate. I have bats in my attic and there are droppings in many places.....places where, if they were getting in and out, water would be as well.

Sounds like bats to me. Only need a gap the size of a dime to get in. Droppings will be at the entry points. If it is warm where you are at, you may be able to see them come or go after dusk or just before dawn.
Since they are protected, you must exclude them rather than kill them.
Took nearly 2 yrs to get them out of my attic.
Good luck,
Gordie

I've searched the Internet, but all answers seem to require that I actually see evidence, and I don't. It's in the ceiling between floors. No droppings anywhere. I hear little feet like mice skittering across the ceiling, and a great big ruckus like two squirrels chasing each other, moving quickly in the 3/4" space created by the strapping between joists and sheetrock.
They are loudly active mostly at night, almost always at 4:30am. Often in the evenings, but sometimes during the day too. However, I haven't heard them in 2 days. Sometimes this happens.
I cannot find any entry points, so I can't observe how they are getting in. A lot of the roof trim is rotted at the ends, but there is no evidence of anything in the attic, and I never hear anything in the walls.
In the past, any mice have eventually made it to the basement traps, but not this time.
thanks,
jim
