[Shop-talk] Gas leak repair/test

The sniffer guy is the gas company employee who responded when I called about
smelling gas. I do think he will come and check again and either pass or fail
the repair. I would RATHER do the repair, turn on the gas, do my own check
and then turn it back off and call him.

The leak is in a tiny hot water
closet. I may re-route steel pipe from attic down in front of heater, not
behind, so I can work on it.

Thanks for suggestions.
Dwade

Who is this guy
with the sniffer? Do you have to pay him to do the
re-check? Maybe what he
expects is for you to fix the problem
without testing it further, and then
his recheck will be the
test. My understanding is that the 15 PSI type test
is just for new
construction. The usual test is at normal operating pressure
with
appliance shutoff valves open. Then make sure system holds without
dropping for however long they specify. With the appliance valves
closed,
you aren't testing the part of the system past the
shutoff. I would ask the
guy what he expects you to do before he returns.
