It may not be much, and it may be too late, but I've only ever used jack
stands with the "pins" that are inserted on one side and protrude from the
other.  Never had one fail, no question if it's engaged, solid stand, same
price as the "ratcheting" ones, just a bit harder to find.

Two sets of stands, and both are "pin" type.
