It really depends on how and when you use the tool. The real benefit of
lithium batteries is that they can sit unused for long periods of time and
still hold a charge. (That's why lithium batteries are used in so many pieces
of emergency equipment. Every emergency strobe and emergency radio on my boat
came with lithium batteries and that's all the manufacturers recommend.) If
this is something you use and charge frequently, or if it is something you
always plan before using (like a chainsaw) and you can remember to charge it
before you need it, I don't think lithium batteries are worth the extra cost.
But, if this tool sits for long periods of time without use and then you need
it available when you need it, lithium is the way to go. I have lithium
batteries in my impact driver. I don't use it often, but even after sitting
for a few months in my garage it holds its charge and is ready to go when I
need it. I'm not all that organized and I rarely think about charging a tool a
few hours before I need it, so for me lithium is the way to go. If you're more
organized and a better planner, maybe you don't need them.

Subject: [Shop-talk] Lithium tool batteries
Hello,
I have a Craftsman 19.2 volt battery-powered drill. I like it, but the
Nicad batteries always seem to be almost dead when I want to use it. I saw
that Sears sells Lithium batteries that are compatible, so I could buy just
a new battery and charger, instead of a whole new system.
Does this sound worth it? Are Lithium batteries long-lasting enough to be
worth the investment?
Thanks,
Doug
