[Mini] Quick release steering wheel woes

Ok so I tried to install a roll pin between the steering column and the
boss tonight

It appears that the cause of the wear in the mechanism is that of the
splines of the boss being made of aluminium AND the splines on the steering
column are NOT steel but some sort of softer bronze type material....

Give up, throw in the towel AND

 get hold of a standard inner column

Get hold of a standard centre boss

Fit these

Get MOT

Then find a quick release that will go between an Astrali(?) wheel and the
standard boss for the "normal" centre boss.
