As was suggested by one of our esteemed members, I performed a test just now, comparing “Official SU Oil”, 10W30 motor oil, and 75W90 gear oil.

I poured a line of the oil on a plastic lid, then tilted it to observe the “legs” (to use an oenophile term). As far as I could tell, there was no real difference in how fast they flowed or how “viscous” they appeared. This leads me to believe that any reasonable grade of motor oil would serve the purpose.

But keep in mind that the ambient temperature was 85º F. Now think of your poor carbs in a cold garage in Maine, or Wisconsin, in February. I am wondering how stiff the gear oil would be under those circumstances.
