I have never had a cover deteriorate that fast. But they will eventually break down in sunlight. Also, the cotton covers will collect dust which slowly works its way through the weave onto your car. So even if the cover isn’t creating powder, the car still will get dusty.

They make silver reflective covers that are more sun resistant than the soft cotton ones, and which don’t let dust settle through. Regardless, you will be surprised how dirty the car looks when you take the cover off.
