[Mgs] MG1100 questions

I decided not to buy it (or at least to make an offer). Perhaps I should give the full details. I think it was last year, but my son came across a Craigslist ad for the car and thought I should look into it. But the owner wanted too much $2500 and the timing for another project was not right. Then while on a vacation trip to Portland, Oregon, my son saw the owner had now put out a more desperate ad with “must go”, $2000 or best offer. And the car was not too far off our route coming home (location being about 200 miles from my house). The owner said he was just going to put it in a yard sale the next weekend to get rid of it. So the first thing I needed to do is figure out what the car was really worth and what it might take to get it back to running condition. I could tell from the ad that it would be a money pit of sorts that would cost at least $1000 and maybe up to $2000 to get it running. Thus my email post to get more background.

 

And to add to that, there were some contradictions in the ad as well (as in what year is it and the 1100 versus 1300). For those of you familiar with the MG 1100, the ad is still up:

Also, I tried to determine the value of the car and blue book “low retail” was around $1900 for a 2-door 63-64 1100. By comparison, the same blue book site lists my 1964 MGB low retail as around $10000. So even if I made an offer of $200 and if the owner accepted out of desperation, its likely I would end up putting in more money than the car is worth. I also looked around to see the market for MG 1100s (very few for sale) but managed to find a decent used one, not too far away, in Idaho for $2500, all working except the speedometer. The one I was looking at in Craigslist above is not running and thus likely has issues yet to be determined.

 

I’m probably game for trying another British car restoration but this one doesn’t look like its worthwhile. Besides, I still have a project with my 67BGT – needs rings (excessive oil consumption) and that is likely this winter’s project.
