Bear with me. The early 3-pin MGB indicator tell-tales operate in
anti-phase to the lights at the corners of the car. The MGB system has two
additional contacts in the indicator switch to connect the tell-tales, as
well as the main switch to direct power to the appropriate side of the car.
The tell-tale output of the flasher unit (the third terminal) is powered all
the time (hence the additional contacts in the switch), and only goes off
when the flasher has clicked to turn the external lights on.
However the TR4 only has a single tell-tale which is wired direct to the
tell-tale, and that uses a different 3-pin flasher unit which connects power
to the tell-tale terminal at the same time it connects power to the main
output terminal. If your MGA only has one tell-tale, and it is on all the
time with the ignition, then I suspect you have the wrong flasher unit. You
may also have the tell-tale and output wires reversed, or the flasher unit
is faulty. More info here http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/electric/et104.htm
