Saturated with oil? Where from?! If you mean the cork will be porous then it would be faulty, and even if it wasn't 'viewable' it would still weep. If you mean from the rocker cover then ... fix that.

The cork gasket for my 73 17V is about 3/16" thick, the rubber quite a bit more than that. Neither will leak if manufactured and fitted correctly, and the covers are flat, and their surfaces and the block surfaces are smooth.

I am replacing the front side cover gasket on a 18V engine in my 1972 MGB. The cork gasket (as well as a rubber one) I ordered is 1/8 inch thick. The gasket I scrapped from the cover was paper thin. The new gasket and cover sticks way out from the motor.

Is this right? I can’t imagine it won’t leak since the cork gasket is viewable and I would think become saturated with oil.
