Well, you have a good sense of humor on getting the clip out. The remaining
clip was around 2/3s of the circle. There was no way tooth picks were going
to work and even with a variety of dental tools. Tried to but there was no
way to get behind the clip and it was very stiff as needed. I finally
resorted to the dremel with the "diamond" round saw. It was too large but I
cut down a bit through the outer part and burred here and there inside, but
I was able to cut the clip finally and it fell out. The knuckle had no
significant damage.

  That is the hard part, where you have to hook the broken ends and pull
them together to release the clip from its groove.  Use Liquid Wrench too,
as the clip can be rusted in place.  

  Also try using the more robust tool, the one you made from a paint
scraper, to push the clip around in the grove to break up rust and dirt.
When you can get the dental scraper behind one end, you have the problem
nearly resolved.

  Is this Ujoint assembly still in the car? If not, more Liquid Wrench,
remove (bolt slides through a relief in the steering shaft) slide the joint
up and down on the shaft to get it off the splines.  If you find, when the
u-joint is finally removed, that the shafts don't line up properly, you can
make a pointer to do the alignment shown in the book with cones by using
wires wrapped around the shafts.

I can see that, but there are two ends and they don't want to be pushed
together.

 A hook made from the hard metal of a paint-scraper blade works, and
tooth-scaling scrapers from your dentist or veterinarian are helpful too,
with their grippy handles and their points and angles at the scraping edge.

How does one go about removing half broken circlips from u-joints? Don't
ask, you've all been there:<)) Also, I chipped the cup a little, a little
shattered; do I have to replace it absolutely or case by case. This is for
the steering u-joint. I had the carbs off and figured I might as well check
out the u-joint. Needles were dry, so needed. This is from followup on a
previous post regarding bad gas pumping and crap in the bowls and pump.

 

Pump was relatively clean, cleaned up the points. We'll see. Still have
water after draining and air compressor push out the drain. Have to replace
seals on the carb.
