Subject: [Mgs] Valve cover refinishing.

Good
afternoon Friends,

As I boxed the freshly refinished head up to put it away
in storage, I
realized that if I went ahead and refinished the valve cover,
I'd have
a natural dust shield for the valve gear, now resting on the head
awaiting the final bits. So that is what I did. Here's how the
engine looked
in Bill's picture. Note the valve cover.

I cleaned the oil deposits from
the inside of the cover then stripped
the paint from the outside. It had been
painted a couple of times
(without stripping). Didn't get a picture of the
bare metal. After
stripping, going over it with a ScotchBrite pad, then
degreasing, I
primered the cover with gray engine primer. Here's a look at it
with
the primer drying.

And after 20 minutes of drying,
I painted it with a satin finish
engine paint called 'Cast Coat Aluminum'.
Its a paint that is
supposed to mimic freshly cast aluminum. It actually does
a good job
if used sparingly. A heavier coat looks like matte silver paint.
Witness, the cover.

The
irregularities around the breather pipe are solder where the pipe
flange is
attached. Note the valve lash plate. I polished it clean
but did not make it
'perfect'. The oil filler cap has the plating
mostly worn away so to carry
the motif, I saved some of the plate's
patina. It too is polished now, just
not 'perfectly'.

Yes, I considered mixing a little green in a pot of matte
silver to
mimic the original color, but I was just too lazy to get the spray
gun
out and more importantly, clean it after use. Its hot out there!

The cap
chain has been mangled a bit. I'll search for a replacement
at Ace before
fighting with the original. Failing that, the original
can be serviceable -
if it is indeed original.

That's it, my friends. Must be Thursday.

Best
regards,

-rick
