160 and 180 are about 1/4" apart on the temp gauge.  If your gauge never or 
barely got off the end-stop then the stat that is in is faulty, pure and 
simple.  I agree that changing to a 'summer' stat is pointless, in most MGBs 
the stat will be fully open anyway regardless of its value.
