California has been using ethanol for years, since they banished MBTE (up to
10%, according to the sticker on the pumps).

No noticeable ill effects, so far.

I share your skepticism about cornstarch-based fuels... just another farm
subsidy. Cellulose-based fuels might possibly be a net gain (when they even
become practical), but the infrastructure issues have yet to be addressed --
you can't pump cornstalk residue, and it is not concentrated like oil
deposits, but spread across the entire central US, on a seasonal basis.
Trucking it to the refinery kind of defeats the purpose.

But you're probably stuck with that 10% from here on out, is my guess.
