Over here (The Netherlands), and I think most European countries, an 
American license is good for up to 30 days. After that, you need a Dutch 
license (usually a matter of lessons and several thousand euros). 
Luckily for me, there's a special tax status (for immigrants like me 
with scarce skills) that lets you trade in your license without having 
to take the test.
