Air makes the pedal long travel before it *starts* to brake as well as 
spongy when it *is* braking, is the long travel what you mean by play?  Any 
problem caused by excessive wear in the shoes and/or drum would also show up 
as long handbrake travel, but air in the system does not affect the 
handbrake.
