It likely was John Cobb, he was the first Brit to run on the salt but  
as an endurance racer.  He drove the Napier-Railton for 100 miles at a  
152.95 average speed.  I'm not sure where he had run before that July  
attempt.

Malcolm Campbell was the first to set a straightaway speed record on  
the salt of over 300 mph.  He had gone 273 at Daytona Beach in the  
Bluebird in the spring of 1935 and his two way average that summer at  
Bonneville was 301.13 mph.
