[Land-speed] A Protocol Question...

Just curious....What's that thing measuring for the 1 mile calibration?   Is
it picking up GPS readings and then using the mile to produce a correction
factor for the local curvature of the Earth?  Tire revolutions?  Something
mysterious that only surveyors and the Rice brothers would know about?
