Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. I’ve done some investigating and measuring.
Chris, the hub angle on the wires and the minilites is the same and your suggestion on using blue shows even contact
William, the is no obvious wear on the splines and no discernible lash so I don’t think this is the issue.
Roland, threads on the hub look fine, I think your idea that the hubs are softer is the right track.
Comparing the hubs and in particular the depth of the thread to an old set of possibly original spinners shows the newer ones are approx 1.5 mm shallower.
I have another set of new spinners that I bought at the same time. Thread depth is the same but they tighten up ok.
I think that the newer spinners I have just fit when new but a few years of removal and refitting has worn the faces just enough the allow for the tiny bit of play I am experiencing.
I will fit the brand new spinners and hope they last another decade.
