[Healeys] Wheels loose

I think it’s a good idea to tighten the knockoffs with the wheel off the ground. I’ve always done that and have never had a knockoff loosen (I mark small “witness marks” with paint on the knockoff and the wheel hub to show if the knockoff and wheel are loosening (the marks show relative movement). They never have so far).
A friend once complained of a noise from the front of his Healey when we were 3000 miles from home. I asked if he tightened the knockoffs with the weight off the wheel. He said he didn’t, but he tightened the loose nut that way and it has never loosened since.

I have encountered the same problem with high mileage wheels and splined hibs.
You can confirm that the spinner is bottoming out by counting the number of turns until the spinner thread bottoms out with the wheel on and then with the wheel off.
With those in my case there was significant wear on the taper of both the wheel (inner) and the hub.
After checking the thickness of the remaining material both on the wheel and hub tapers I turned about 0.100" off the outer end of the hubs and all has been well so far. 🤞

Gents,
I have 2 sets of wheels for my BJ7. A set of wires and a set of minilite replicas.
Recently, I am having trouble getting the front wheels tight enough. It seems the thread on the hub is bottoming out in the spinner before it clamps the wheel properly unless I belt the hell out of it to get it tight enough.
The hubs and spinners have been on the car for over a decade. Car is a daily driver.
The obvious fix is to file/machine the end of the hub or replace the spinners.
Anyone else have this issue before.
