[Healeys] 100-4 od

David has probably, over the years, pulled more transmissions than all
of us combined. Listen to what he is saying. Pull the whole unit as
one from the engine backplate.
I have this task awaiting me in a gearbox swap. If you read the shop
manual; even with the trans attached it will require you to get some
clearance -loosen the motor mounts and remove the radiator as you must
raise and tilt the engine 5" in order to clear the GB/OD unit at the
rear.
Put a jack at the engine backplate and place a board across the X
opening (for safety) and use a rope to lift the unit AFTER it is clear
of the clutch-do not stress the clutch or upset the fit of the
pressure plate by letting it rest on the splines-that way it will slip
right back in and no damage is done to the driveline. It must be a
smooth, slick move out, and then in as well, or you are in trouble.
Unit is heavy to say the least.
If you did successfully get the OD off and out-putting it back is
another story as you must tie back the oil pump plunger (else it james
into the main bushing and bends or breaks the cam wheel) and how will
you line up the mainshaft into the OD clutch and insure the 8 springs
end up on their pegs? That all should be done vertically on the
bench-see some online YOUTUBE "experts" fumble thru that process!
Best if done with two people one on the top and one (safely) below to
hand it backward and guide it forward upon return. Take your time (as
David suggests-no shortcuts)-drink beer after its out and in. Hank,

Did this once and will NEVER try it again. You will have to slide
the overdrive into the driveshaft tunnel and get the overdrive out.
Then you have a fight to get it back in. I would recommend that
after you get the overdrive out, remove the transmission, install the
overdrive onto the transmission. Then install the complete unit into
the car. 50 years of working on British cars and I have found that
there is NO short cuts. Just bite the bullet and do it right the first
time. David Nock

SUBJECT: [Healeys] 100-4 od Good afternoon everyone, I am
trying to remove my od without removing the tranny. I know it is not a
great way to go, but I am into it. Do I lift the od and tranny as a
unit and if so how high do i dare Iift the unit without damaging
something? I have separated the od and tranny about 2 inches and have
the od slid back so it is sitting on top of the 2 rubber mounts. The
chassis keeps me from sliding it back any further back unless I can
raise the tranny/od high enough to clear the chassis. I would
appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance, Sam DeSalvo
