[Healeys] Self Repair with Hagerty?

Five years ago, I had an engine fire in my MG Midget (my stupid fault!). The only real damage was to the paint on the underside of the bonnet and a circular area on the left front wing, plus any plastic or rubber items in the left side of the engine bay (including those on my newly-rebuilt and just reinstalled carbs from Joe Curto). I was very lucky to have two fire extinguishers sitting on the ground next to the car.

The paint was 20-years old, in lacquer, and otherwise still in excellent shape, but no one wants to paint with lacquer anymore.

At first, given the insured value and the estimated cost to repair and repaint with a new modern paint job, Hagerty wanted to total the car. But they gave me a list of potential repair shops and agreed to allow me to negotiate with the restoration facility I chose, which agreed to keep the cost below the total mark. Hagerty paid the bill.

I consider that Hagerty provided outstanding service, were most understanding of the situation and cooperative with me in saving the car.

I also have my BJ8 insured with them. As a bonus, they also send me an excellent magazine every other month (part of the Hagerty Driver’s Club benefit).

I also have Hagerty and though I never put in a claim for work to be done, I did put in a claim for a complete loss. They were great to work with and no hassles. I would expect the same for you. Just be honest and let them know your plans. They understand people working on their own cars and they also understand your time is not "free".

To cover yourself, go to a local shop, explain your problem and get a ball park estimate. Relay that information to Hagerty. I have no real idea what they will say, but if my experience with them is relevant, they will work with you. Not, against you.

Good luck and let us know what you find out and here's to quick and semi-painless recovery.

Shroud appears undamaged, just the bonnet.

I have a couple vehicles insured with Hagerty, but have never made a claim. If they're like most insurers, though, they'll make an estimate and cut you a check (if they have their own adjusters). For labor rates, they likely have a chart for 'prevailing' rates in your area (I doubt it's much less than $100/hr anywhere in the States).

Looks like some damage to the shroud, or is that just water/extinguisher damage?

Damage at first look seems to be to wiring harness, bonnet paint, etc. Can't see that I could get a local shop to repair anytime soon and am considering doing the work myself, except for bonnet paint. Anyone have any experience how Hagerty would handle that? How would they pay for my labor?

Always knew I had a hot Healey,
