color:black'>Five years ago, I had an engine fire in my MG Midget (my stupid
fault!). The only real damage was to the paint on the underside of the bonnet
and a circular area on the left front wing, plus any plastic or rubber items in
the left side of the engine bay (including those on my newly-rebuilt and just
reinstalled carbs from Joe Curto). I was very lucky to have two fire
extinguishers sitting on the ground next to the car.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

color:black'>The paint was 20-years old, in lacquer, and otherwise still in
excellent shape, but no one wants to paint with lacquer anymore. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

color:black'>At first, given the insured value and the estimated cost to repair
and repaint with a new modern paint job, Hagerty wanted to total the car. But
they gave me a list of potential repair shops and agreed to allow me to
negotiate with the restoration facility I chose, which agreed to keep the cost
below the total mark. Hagerty paid the bill.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

work to be done, I did put in a claim for a complete loss. They were great to
work with and no hassles. I would expect the same for you. Just be honest and
let them know your plans. They understand people working on their own cars and

and get a ball park estimate. Relay that information to Hagerty. I have no real
idea what they will say, but if my experience with them is relevant, they will
