       Agreed with Michael about The Cloisters—a marvelous collection of medieval architecture (went there several times in my college years).
       For something more modern, I suggest the Ellis Island Immigration/Statue of Liberty museums, and the Lower East Side Tenement Museum (a National Historic Site), to see what it was like to come to America a century ago.
