[Healeys] Starter electrical problem not solved with new starter. Gremlins?

Sounds to me like there is something in the ground circuit that is
failing.  Perhaps nothing more than a corroded connection that you are
partially cleaning up when removing the lead which then fails when the load
is appklied.  Try a new heavy cable with clean fittings and go directly
from battery negative to ground, bypassing the shutoff switch.
