[Healeys] 100 choke

Gentlemen,

The choke on my BN2, which appears to be the same as on a BN1, certainly has a CW quarter turn function, but I have never needed to use it.

The pull-out shaft has two notches in it. These are sufficient to hold the choke open at ‘full’ or ‘half’ settings.

I find that I need the ‘full’ setting for about only 15 seconds, and pushed fully in at about 30 seconds for a smooth steady idle.

That said, I live in a temperate climate so it does get many very cold starts.

Here is my spare Hundred choke showing the two notches. A nice simple and sturdy mechanism.

You will see it is quite different to those fitted to the 6-cylinder cars, which do not have them, and also have a smaller knob.

Mark

I am getting conflicting information on the OE choke cable. Curtis, I interpreted your reply to be saying the original 100 choke cable incorporated a 1/4 turn friction lock mechanism. Is that correct or are you describing the same type of inherent friction Perry is describing?

Gary

Should have been more clear on my response. Our BN2 choke cable knob does not lock in the quarter turn position. Still works per the owners manual which says: Pull the choke knob to full pull, crank engine until it starts, then return the knob to half pull for rapid warming up. The choke must be fully released at the earliest moment possible.” This is a solid wire inside a non lubricated cable sheath....lots of friction.

No mention of the turning the knob to lock it.

My recollection was that when braided choke cables started to be used that two things were added, a strong coke return spring at the carb linkage and a quarter turn lock to hold the selected position.

P

As always I have wrong before

Curtis,

Thanks for clarifying that.

Yes, the originals friction in place. Sorry, I don't think that I have any spares

Did the OE 100 choke cable feature the 1/4 turn friction lock like on the BJ8's for example?

If yes, do any of the suppliers sell a repro that includes a good quality lock with the correct knob or even better does anyone have a good used OE one for sale?
