Tom: Is it hanging up on the firewall? The gear box needs to be rotated clockwise enough so the "bump" on the bell housing where the starter pinion goes clears the firewall. And the whole engine/transmission alignment must be perfect. If you have done that, then my next guess would be a damaged pilot bush. .

I am having one heck of a time getting the gear box back in my BJ8. Three people--me under the car-----had to remove the two mounting pieces from the rear--finally got it situated in the rear slot. Seems the drive shaft--that I have lifted up as high as possible is still in the way. we gave up on it after 2 hours of trying. I've replaced 2 of these in the past but never had this problem. Anyone have any comments/advice they want to share?
