[Healeys] Speedometer repair

For my BN2 rebuild all I started with was a bare shell with some suspension.  All my instruments are either bought separately or they were donated to the cause.  They are the correct instruments for the BN2, but having no information whatsoever on how many miles were on that shell I had the speedo dialed back to "0".  Besides starting from the ground up with new and rebuilt parts from all over the place is like building a car from new anyway.

When I bought my BJ8 in 1984, the odometer was not working.  Itread 51,788 miles.    When I opened the unit I discovered a small spring andlever arm lying in the bottom of the case.  After I determined where those camefrom and reinstalled them, the odo has worked perfectly ever since.  Notknowing the mileage exactly, I had no problem zeroing it out.  It now shows 123,834miles.  I’m a great believer in log books for cars for recording their history.

When I had my speedo rebuilt 0ver 40 years ago, I had it setto 000000. Now I wish I had either noted the original miles or left it alone.

When I restored my BT7 Tricarb, the speedo had 100,xxxmiles on it . I did have it reset to 0 miles when the speedo was rebuilt butnow I think perhaps that I should have left it as is. The mileage would havebeen accurate ( as far as I know, I am not the original owner) and the postrestoration distance easy to measure given the first 3 numbers

Totally personal preference, but I would keep the original mileageas it reflects how much the car has been driven and it seems more honest.
