[Healeys] Speedometer repair

When I bought my BJ8 in 1984, the odometer was not working. It read 51,788 miles. When I opened the unit I discovered a small spring and lever arm lying in the bottom of the case. After I determined where those came from and reinstalled them, the odo has worked perfectly ever since. Not knowing the mileage exactly, I had no problem zeroing it out. It now shows 123,834 miles. I’m a great believer in log books for cars for recording their history.

When I had my speedo rebuilt 0ver 40 years ago, I had it set to 000000. Now I wish I had either noted the original miles or left it alone.

When I restored my BT7 Tricarb, the speedo had 100,xxx miles on it . I did have it reset to 0 miles when the speedo was rebuilt but now I think perhaps that I should have left it as is. The mileage would have been accurate ( as far as I know, I am not the original owner) and the post restoration distance easy to measure given the first 3 numbers

Totally personal preference, but I would keep the original mileage as it reflects how much the car has been driven and it seems more honest.

I am sending my original speedo to Nisonger’s for repair. Should I keep the same 67,000 miles or go to zero? Comments.
