Hi Patrick, yes too deep. On the 2.2 litre version of the engine used in the L.D Vans during the 1960’s the same plate was there, but cast iron. The hole could simply be a casting core support hole but I don’t know that.

It’s occurred to me that the blanking plate is there to act as a sacrificial anode. Or is that looking too deep into it?

I have been sent a short article about the blanking plate fitted to the front of the 100 engine. Photo attached.
Would anyone know the purpose of the plate? Perhaps in other engine installations the opening it covers serves another purpose?
