I got a $154 ticket in San  Francisco for not having my front Oregon plate
on my car!

It was my Ford Escape. I have a special interest yom plate on my Healey and
only one is required. Otherwise I need both plates.
BTW I bough my ford from a used car lot with no front olste or mounting
bracket.

Neil,

Do you have a Moss catalog?? They have a pretty good diagram of the 
mirror assembly (p. 112 on the latest catalog).? It's comprised of the 
mirror, a nut plate, a couple screws and a bracket (the diagram shows 
the bracket under the nut plate, but I think it's a fair assumption the 
nut plate goes under the bracket--that's how i assembled mine).? On the 
bracket, the two screws go through the upper part into the nut plate, 
and the bottom of the bracket has a hole for the single, chrome-plated 
screw and flat washer located dead center of the dash.

I'd send a link, but Moss doesn't have the diagrams online.? I'll get 
some photos today if you need them, but the diagram is pretty 
self-explanatory and, as you mention, I don't think you can see much 
with the heater in the way.

I got a fix-it ticket a few years ago while driving a Mitsubishi Eclipse. I quickly fabricated a snap on bracket, drove to the police station, had the ticket signed off, left the station, stopped and removed the front plate. I don?t have front plates on the healey or my daily driver. However, it does not matter if the car came without a front mounting bracket, in California it is the owners? responsibility to mount the front plate. If I am pulled over for that I plan on telling them that I just finished some body work and the front bracket is backordered. Don?t know if that will work.

Thanks Mike and Bob.  That helps a lot.  I didn't think of looking in the
Moss catalog.

I was thinking of making a threaded plate to mount the mirror.  Now that I
know the plate is NA from Moss, I *will* have to make my own.  I can use
transfer marking punches to get the hole spacing exact.

We never found any nuts or plate when the mirror came loose, so not sure
what was put on there when the car was restored.

Mike, the tires are Vredestein 165 HR15 Sprint Classics.

This BN2 that we took to South Dakota is not my car.  It is owned by
a female friend of mine.

Here's one for the technoctats:-

You may have noticed my posts about swapping from two-shouldered to
single-shouldered dashpots. I did it because having two of one and one of
the other was irritating, not because I thought there'd be any changes.

So, I swapped the offending two and that gave me three HD6s, all with one
shoulder.

Car started on the choke, same as normal. Seemingly!

However, doing the garden hose in one ear trick revealed that the rear carb,
always single shouldered, was making less intake hiss than the other
recently added pair. Easily rectified.

 

I took the car out this afternoon. Started fine and ran well. But, if I
eased off, the revs dropped and the engine cut out. Also, there was quite a
lot of popping and f**ting on the overrun.

So, on my return, I gave the front two carbs about half a turn up on the
slow idle screws. This, quite small adjustment really, seemed to cure it and
even to raise the idle rather higher than I like. 

Adjusted down quarter of a turn and all seems well.

Questions:- beyond the obvious - ie that changing dashpots does make a
difference after all - what is going on? Why was there a change?

(Plainly, I swapped needles and springs when I swapped dashpots so I've got
all the same in the carbs..the ones that I had all along).

Any ideas?

I am looking for a source for split rivets. All I can find on line is either
the wrong size or you need to buy 1000's. The size seems to be 1/8" dia x
1/2" or 9/16" long.

If your box doesn't leak (much), any good gear oil will do.? Penrite or 
Corn Head Grease if it's a leaker.

You might try a hardware store that is not a chain or big box store.  We
have one locally that has a whole row of bolts-nuts-washer bins with
specialty hardware above that.

Why can't Moss order the correct ones from a place like McMaster-Carr?  If
they need to order a 1000, then they will have an adequate supply for us
that need small amounts.  You know that are going to mark them up, but at
least we won't have 980 pieces we don't need.
