Put the rubber strip—aka ‘glazing rubber’—on the edges of the glass and push them in the window together. If that won’t go go to an auto glass shop and get thinner rubber (or ask them to do it).

The glass rattles around in the channel without the rubber so I know the channel is the right size. I think the rubber is intended to provide a tight fit into the channel. However, with the rubber in place and with soap and water, the glass simply will not go in.
