[Healeys] Door glass

Fred, I don't know if the rubber has been changed, but when Moss was selling it a few years ago the instructions that came with the channel rubber said to wipe it with gasoline to cause it to swell. That did absolutely nothing to the one I bought. I took the rubber and the glass and frame to my local glass shop and they installed it and saved me a lot of hassle (only charging $7, too). Don't forget to put the new nylon guides into the frame before installing the rubber and glass.

The shattered glass probably resulted from the vertical scratches left in the glass from raising and lowering it against the two screws that attach the door pull. If they are too long, they'll scratch it, causing surface stress risers that can eventually cause the tempered glass to shatter. Happened to me. The problem is the sheet metal screws attaching the door pull can pull out of the metal, enlarging the holes. It's hard to find a screw short enough but large enough diameter to fit the new holes. I modified my door to take machine screws, which are much easier to find in the right length and diameter, and stronger to boot.

Subject: [Healeys] Door glass

Listers,

I am attempting to replace the shattered glass in the driver's side door on my BJ8. The rubber strip that goes into the window channel has been placed in the channel.

I cannot get the glass to slide into the rubber and channel. I wet both the rubber and the glass with a mixture of water and dish soap but the glass will not go into the rubber/channel. The glass rattles around in the channel without the rubber so I know the channel is the right size. I think the rubber is intended to provide a tight fit into the channel. However, with the rubber in place and with soap and water, the glass simply will not go in.

Any ideas on how to get this fitted properly? I am afraid to use a dead blow hammer on the channel.

Thanks,

Fred
