See where mine is in photo. I marked it yellow and it is just forward of the brake line connection although this is on a 1960 BN7

When these cars were new, the petrol available in England was very different.? I used 101 octane leaded petrol.? The lead would foul the plugs leading to the need to replace them on? a yearly basis. I would question if the fuel we now use would make plug changes completely redundant.? Furthermore I wonder if those specified then are appropriate with lower octane unleaded fuels?

I'm trying to remove the turn signal indicator lamps from the wood dash.

piece on the front side screws off, but it's stuck and I don't want to
break anything.

I recall when new (64) I had to change the plugs due to misfiring at
high rpm, close to the manual recommendations.

See attached. Car is a Mk II BT7 ie a 4-seater.

So, I'm doing a lot of routine maintenance at the moment and one of my tasks
was to grease the "lever, balance" & the "cable - handbrake" ie the two
grease nipples associated with the handbrake behind the rear RHS wheel. The
clip - per the attached - has lost its nut and washer. The actual clip is
still there but it has slid down the cable from wherever it was attached.

I've got hundreds of pictures on file, but nothing of that particular spot.

Does anyone have a picture or its location?

Thanks,

Simon

I'm running 0.028" on my BJ8 with Pertronix, and could probably go a bit
wider.

They most likely will break. The green plastic has probably melted into the aluminium housing.

Tom:

The chrome ring is actually part of the main green plastic threaded assembly. To remove, unscrew ? gently! ? the aluminum bulb housing on the back of the dash panel while holding the little chrome ring with the other hand to keep it from moving. These parts are pretty delicate to start with ? after 40 plus years, even more so. If you are lucky, they?ll com apart with no fuss. You?ll see what I mean as soon as you get things moving. Hopefully, nobody has glued anything in place in the past.

I think I have one out of the car somewhere that I can photograph for you if it will help. If you will be more comfortable with that before you start, let me know.

Good luck!

CP Generators rebuilt my starter motor and generator.? They had to make some brushes for the generator, but the rest of the rebuild was done in a day.? They used to be in Los Angeles, but recently moved to Fontana and have been a family business for 57 years.? Some of the workers in the back have been there over 30 years.? Highly recommended in the local restoration community.? Highly rated on Yelp also.? Very reasonable prices, much less than Star.? You will have to paint the unit yourself unless you want it black.?

Maybe there is some sort of special "Lucas" magic needed to make the thing concours.....but I doubt it.? Everything the rebuild shop does is inside the casing and not visible from outside AFAIK.

David is absolutely correct.
Sometimes they can be saved by removing the blob of melted green plastic at
the bottom of the cavity into which the bulb holder is clipped.

Perry, David, & Earl... Thanks for your help with the turn signal
indicators. Looks like it's a matter of being gentle and lucky... Very
lucky.,...

In the meantime, I need to extract the temperature sensing bulb from the
block, and I need to split the choke cable at the block.

Is a cresent wrench sufficient to remove the temperature sensing bulb from
the block, or do I need a special tool to remove it?

I loosed the cable stop in the choke block, and I thought the choke cable
would pull free pretty easily, but the choke cable is not pulling free
yet. I don't think I'd have to complete pull the cable stop apart, but
maybe I do?

Thanks... these are the last three things I need to undo before
refinishing the dash.

Nah. I usually pull them once a year for inspection (removing for
valve check/adjustment and compression check anyway), clean and re-gap
as necessary, then keep on truckin' until next time. No reason to do
it more frequently as long as the engine is running well. I currently

Do you guys hold to that approximately? By that I mean?..all things
being equal and the plugs looking OK & working OK, only swap at +/-
    12,000 miles.

Maybe plugs last longer these days? Most things don?t in my experience.

For what it?s worth, I?m running NGK?s BP6ES. As to the gap, I?ll leave
that can of worms closed for the while!

    Thanks,

    Simon

Thank you all for the advice. Pretty much what I'd expected and hoped for.

In the past, with various vehicles and when faced with, say, failing plug
leads, I've tended to throw in everything...plugs, condenser, rotor & even
cap on occasions. Seldom fails, if the initial diagnosis was correct, but
cost can add up! And, of course, there's the risk that what one is ditching
is better than its replacement. Rotors and condensers for example. Mind you,
a 123Ignition has no condenser and a decent rotor. But we won't go there..

Simon

Good luck with turn signal indicators. Don?t have them, so can?t comment.

The temperature sensor:-

I?ve heard that people cut a slot in a socket, put it on, put a Jubilee clip or two around the socket and there?s the tool.

Never tried that and preferred cutting a slot in a ring spanner. A tip?.the first spanner broke at once. You need to cut it per the attached. That way, most of the torque(?) goes onto nut rather than onto the cut shoulder?.if I make myself clear. First time, I put the spanner on, then put something on as a bit of extra leverage.

Good luck,

Simon

Perry, David, & Earl... Thanks for your help with the turn signal indicators. Looks like it's a matter of being gentle and lucky... Very lucky.,...

In the meantime, I need to extract the temperature sensing bulb from the block, and I need to split the choke cable at the block.

Is a cresent wrench sufficient to remove the temperature sensing bulb from the block, or do I need a special tool to remove it?

I loosed the cable stop in the choke block, and I thought the choke cable would pull free pretty easily, but the choke cable is not pulling free yet. I don't think I'd have to complete pull the cable stop apart, but maybe I do?

Thanks... these are the last three things I need to undo before refinishing the dash.

- Tom
