[Healeys] [OT] Collector Car 'Hobby'

When you look at the condition of the BJ8 that Rick talks about, at least on the photos, the exhaust system was almost dragging on the ground, some rubber seals was either riveted or screwed to the windshield posts, perhaps to make a better seal, the crude way the door seals were cutoff as well as those on the windshield posts, the trafficator signal arm facing downward, and the evidence, at least on photos of surface rust on the interior of the car on the bulkhead indicates to me a lack of proper preparation for a sale at the very least, at most a superficial restoration just to make it good enough for a sale and that is no longer good enough to obtain even mid-range prices. Yet the auction house described it as restored to original condition, it is obvious that they did not do their homework to start with. Yet, most of these places charge 10-12 % both to the seller and buyer, a ridiculous amount given the time and exposure.
I personally feel that a few of these auction houses will either merge or disappear in the next while as they are, at least with cars under $200,000.00, being outshined by places like Bring-a-Trailer and a few other popping up on the internet.
Perhaps fortunately, the cars that used to be parts car that a number of places advertised as “projects” will return to be parts cars, not necessarily a bad thing either.
Totally agree with Rick that the price guide is heavily influenced, perhaps too much so, by the sales at auctions.

Jean

To some degree, the high-dollar auctions reflect the Healey market in general. I've taken on the duties of "Auction Reporter" for Healey Marque and, as a result, am following the auctions way more than before. The big-time auctions need lots of product to move over the stand in a three-day auction, so although the high-end cars get most of the publicity, there are a lot of mid-range cars up for sale, too. And the same factors that affect the expensive stuff influences the Healey market as well. Fear of recession, aging of the core group of hobbyists, younger folks not caring about the 50s-70s stuff, etc. For example, while at Mecum Monterey I saw this rather nice Phase 1 BJ8 bid up to $35,000 and stop dead: https://www.mecum.com/lots/CA0819-380928/1964-austin-healey-3000-mkiii-bj8-convertible/<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.mecum.com%2Flots%2FCA0819-380928%2F1964-austin-healey-3000-mkiii-bj8-convertible%2F&data=02%7C01%7C%7C6e4cc55c93b04e6fa20c08d728adff9d%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637022600089036992&sdata=wxJu2nSV%2BrbAzBJ4k2hPp7M04i4f47luSukh90llyLk%3D&reserved=0> That's certainly way below what that car would've sold for a few years ago and if you take the time to search "Austin-Healey" at all the Monterey auction houses, you'll see similar no-sales across the board. Obviously, auctions don't tell the whole tale of Healey sales, but the price guides and auction sale prices heavily influence what people expect to get or pay in a private sale.

Just my take,

Rick Neville

Are the results of these "high dollar" auctions applicable to our meager (by comparison) cars? I dont know the answer to that but I sort of doubt it since we are only opperating in the five figure segment and mostly on the lower end of that. When the auctions include cars of our ilk as a few recently posted have referenced then it gets my attention.

Just wondering

I always thought "bespoke" was more in keeping with a visit to a Saville Row tailor, not an automobile. But either way, each is out of my league. Here's another take on the Monterey auctions: https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidun.../#7aba6b1b692b<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.forbes.com%2Fsites%2Fdavidundercoffler%2F2019%2F08%2F21%2Fclassic-car-market-hits-a-pothole-at-2019-monterey-car-week%2F%237aba6b1b692b&data=02%7C01%7C%7C6e4cc55c93b04e6fa20c08d728adff9d%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637022600089046997&sdata=c4P6uEYtlN%2Fj2FiaYUMLKHrRKtUYN0bB%2BTCj34SNXPA%3D&reserved=0> Looks like a hard rain is goin' to fall.

If nothing else, that article helped me understand a new word that has been creeping into the TV shows (car stuff) and print info lately, BESPOKE is the word.

One TV show used it over and over and by the rest of the dialog used, I had no idea what they were talking about. At first I thought they were referencing the 24 inch wheels they were using on the build. But they didn’t look anything like a set of spoked wire wheels from Dunlap.

I read the referenced article which talked about bespoked projectiles, scratched my head and said to my lovely wife, “What in the world does BESPOKE mean?”

With a slight smile on those lips, said, CUSTOM or Built for the buyer!!!

Oh, is the word custom to old school or outdated for the “car guys and gals” today? Maybe for million dollar supercars.

Not that I’m not interested in learning new words, I mean knowing what the advertised heart medicine is talking about, an ACE or an R, may have some bearing on my future existence! 😊

Hope everyone is having a great day. I have to spend some time in the garage to work on my brother in laws BESPOKED 100-Six. Fitting a quick change rear axle to the beast.
