[Healeys] 165/80R15 tires

 I just completed some research in tires currently available in a size that would be acceptable for Healeys.

I discovered that Tire Rack offers a "Classic" brand in that size, which I suspect is made in China, for $79.95. You can call it up by requesting tires for a 1957 Karmann Ghia. 

In addition, Coker Tire offers the Vredestein Sprint Classics for $119 and Michelin XZXs for $188. 

At the top end, Lucas Classic Tires offers Pirelli Cinturatos in that size, – which the Pirelli Site says are appropriate for Alfa-Romeos of that period -- for $199 each.

For my money, I've been running tires of the "Classic" variety under a variety of sidewall brands. My current set (which should probably be replaced soon -- no tire should EVER be used that is more than 10 years old -- manufacturing month and year are marked on the tire in the format MMYY) is labeled "Metric" and was ordered through my local tire supplier/mounter.

As I remember, they fitted them with inner tubes -- I don't trust wire wheels to hold air -- and the inner tubes are a standard size used in agricultural equipment.

SInce I'm VERY unlikely to drive my Healey faster than 80 mph, I don't think they need to be speed-rated, but I sort of like the idea of buying a tire from a known manufacturer, so an extra $120 on a once a decade purchase isn't a real deal-breaker. 

Now if I were buying tires for use on the track, I would definitely be looking at the Pirellis or Michelins.

?SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) ? California's governor and legislative leaders on Wednesday proposed raising $52 billion to fix the state's roads through a big gasoline tax increase, higher car registration fees and a charge on emission-free vehicles.

The 10-year plan would boost gasoline excise taxes for the first time in more than two decades, raising them 12 cents per gallon ? a 43 percent increase. The tax would rise automatically with inflation.

For the first time, owners of zero emission vehicles would pay a $100 annual fee because they use public roads but don't pay gasoline taxes that fund highway maintenance.

The plan also includes a sliding fee on vehicles, with owners of cheaper vehicles paying less. 

The fee, separate from annual vehicle registration fees, would range from $25 a year for vehicles worth less than $5,000 to $175 for cars worth $60,000 and up.
Gov. Jerry Brown said the plan would cost most drivers less than $10 per month and would be offset by reduced vehicle-repair expenses??

 I have seen nothing that states how the value of vehicles will be determined but I am sure they will choose the method that returns the greatest amount of tax money.

The problem was the soldered bullet connection on the green with white wire inside of the rubber boot at the lamp socket. That is the one thing I did not check because I had not expected it to fail. I installed a new wiring harness 6,000 miles ago but I reused original bullet connectors. I am surprised it worked this long.

The right hand front signal light stopped flashing. The rear lamps flash normally when the switch is operated. The left one works as it should. All lamps are good. When I turn on the headlights the running lights illuminate. I installed a known working 1157 combination running and signal light and it would not flash When I test the flasher unit per the workshop manual by connecting the terminals B and L and operating the direction indicator switch the flasher lamps do not operate, thus the flasher is good. Testing the brake switch overriding relay per the manual gives the following results:

Connecting terminal 1 to terminals 2 and 3 ? left hand front and rear lamps flash.

Connecting terminal 2 to terminals 6 and 7 ? right hand rear lamp flashes but the right hand front does not.

What should I check now?

I put Nexens--Korean, I believe--on our 100M; it was the only brand 
available at the time in the 'correct' size (165/80R15). They've been OK 
so far, but I haven't had them in the wet.? Oh, they were about $40/per 
at WalMart.
