[Healeys] Rear end noise

Try having British cars! Seriously, take it out, we pull the pumpkins at races all the time and throw them back in. You will be able to tell a lot just by looking at it and don't need to be an expert. Look closely at the teeth for a wear pattern. Look for places where the teeth are making contact, look for ridges worn into the gears. Ridges would be bad. Look for a wear pattern that is either too low or way too high on the pinion gear. Look for what you think might be excessive lash in the gears. If you're lucky your rebuilder will re set the gears with shims. Or if the pattern looks reasonable, maybe it's just noisy. You're better to check it now than risk blowing it up and having it take out your transmission. Done that.

It was installed by a shop that only do rear ends..............but with my luck they probably screwed it up

I called them earlier today and they said not much they can do because it's a after market gearset (LEMPERT)

So.......don't know what to do....maybe pull it and take it to someone else........what a pain

Mitchell, you better pull that one out and have a look. Setting up the gears is tricky and if not aligned properly wear will destroy them.

I have done this myself in the past and finally did one right. But now I take them to professionals, but those guys sometime don't know what they're doing/make mistakes. Pulling the pumpkin should take you less than an hour on that car. When you drain the oil you can look for shrapnel in the oil.

Experts,

I had the Lempert gear set installed in my 1966 BJ8 this year put about 2000 miles on it.

I have a pretty loud hum at about 35-45 mph.........the hum only occurs when accelerating.....when you let off it goes away.

Can someone tell me what is causing it ? can the new gears be readjusted if that's the problem?

Thanks in advance

Mitchell
