[Healeys] Hi Guys, I am wondering if anyone knows if there is one long spring pin that holds the shift lever in place on the BJ8 or two short ones? If there are two how long would each one be? Many thanks. Brad Holden

Brad, that seems to contradict the BMC parts manual which indicates that the roll pins are used on BJ7s and on the first 1,340 BJ8 gearboxes (which corresponds closely with the number of Phase 1 BJ8s) with the threaded pins being used on Phase 2 BJ8s. I would be interested in the serial number of your gearbox if it has the roll pins. The number is on the passenger's side of the gearbox case, as shown in the attachment. BMIHT says your original gearbox serial number is 12706. Unless your gearbox is not original, it should take the threaded pins. If your gearbox is the original and still has the roll pins, then that is another example of the official BMC parts manual being wrong.

The gearshift lever ball has to be free to rotate right and left to select the gears. A pin all the way through the ball would prevent that. Although the ball is drilled all the way through, there is a vertical groove on each side of the ball that accommodates the pins to prevent the gear lever from moving upward and coming out of the housing. The pins are not driven into the hole in the ball, but just far enough to enter the grooves.

The roll pin I just removed from my BJ7 gearbox measures 0.218" diameter and 1 inch long. You should be able to find those at your local hardware store if you need them.

Bob, Jean, Mark, Steve, Thanks for the input, according to the guys at British Car specialists the later models had two roll pins holding the lever in place instead of the threaded bolts, the housing on my gearbox has no threads on either side so i am thinking they are correct, still seems strange to use two short pins instead of one long one, more thoughts?

Brad,

The bolt, pictured here, is 5/8" long.

Brad, the BMC Mechanical Service Parts List (AKD 3523) for BJ7 and BJ8 shows two rollpins, P/N RPS1210, used for BJ7 gearboxes and BJ8 gearboxes serial numbers 101 - 1441 to secure the gearshift lever. For BJ8 gearboxes, serial numbers 1442 and up, two threaded "Locating pins", P/N 2A3602 are shown instead of rollpins. The original gearbox for your BJ8 was 12706, so it should have the two threaded locating pins (and a spring washer under each) if it is still the original. The locating pin looks like a normal hex-head screw with an unthreaded part at the end of the shank that fits into the holes in the ball of the gearshift lever.

I have a spare BJ7 gearbox with the rollpins. They are about an inch long, as I recall, but they are not accessible to me right now to measure them.
